About the Incoming Class 2005

On August 29, we welcomed nearly 100 new students. It never ceases to amaze me how diverse our students are. They come to us from all over the world and from all walks of life. The range of skills and experiences they bring to Yale is remarkable, as is their commitment to improving health care for all people.

As you can imagine, many of our students have already gained considerable expertise in the health sciences prior to coming to Yale. But many come to us with skills that one would not ordinarily associate with nursing. I would like to share with you just a few examples:

  • Several are accomplished athletes: field hockey players, marathon runners, rock climbers, yoga trainers and kick boxers. We also have accomplished artists: actors, dancers, musicians, painters and photographers.
  • Most have significant volunteer experience, in the United States as well as in 20 countries around the world, including Japan, India, Singapore, Nepal, Mexico, Honduras, Peru, Haiti, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, and Madagascar.
  • We have students who are fluent in Spanish, French, German, Korean, Japanese, Cantonese, and Burmese.
  • Many choose nursing as a second or third career: among our incoming class are former public school teachers, fiction writers, small business owners, bankers, accountants, sales professionals, restaurant managers, chefs, Congressional aides and Air Force National Guardsmen.

The skills, talents and experiences the students bring to YSN will enrich community life at Yale and in New Haven. Having met and spoken with many of these students myself, I am confident that their creativity, compassion and dedication to nursing will help shape the future landscape of healthcare in this country and around the world. Welcome to Yale!
