Community Health Rotation in Nicaragua

Six students and two preceptors made their journeys' to Latin America in July 2007 for the Community Health Rotation. The participants experienced an extensive inside look into a third world healthcare system. The Nicaragua trip was both diverse and educational. Students participated in four local clinics promoting healthcare for women and children. They experienced a hospital labor and delivery floor and worked with world-renowned Midwife Mama Liche at her clinic. Some of the students even participated in policy planning. The highlight of the trip was when the clinical group commissioned a group of muralists to paint a mural to promote cervical cancer screening. Murals are a common way to make statements and advertise in Nicaragua. It is located on one of the main streets for all to see and will last for years to come. The site, the people, and especially the preceptors made this an amazing and unforgettable Community Health rotation.
