Dr. Santacroce is Associate Professor, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Specialty. She holds a BSN from Hunter College-City University of New York, a MSN in pediatric nursing from Catholic University of America, and has been certified as a PNP since 1982. Dr. Santacroce received a PhD in Nursing from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she studied under Dr. Merle H. Mishel, originator of the Uncertainty in Illness Theory. Dr. Santacroce completed two years of post-doctoral training in Psychosocial Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing under the direction of Drs. Ruth McCorkle and Janet Deatrick. While at Penn, she worked as an interventionist with childhood cancer survivors in the Surviving Cancer Competently Intervention Program (R01CA63930, A. Kazak, P.I.), Division of Oncology, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Dr. Santacroce has more than 25 years experience in the nursing care of children with cancer or HIV infection. She has been a clinical nurse and nurse manager with the Cancer Nursing Service, Clinical Center and a PNP with the Pediatric Branch Infectious Diseases Group, National Cancer Institute, both at the National Institutes of Health. She was also PNP/Study Coordinator, Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Unit, Duke University Medical Center. She is a founder of The Children's Inn at NIH, a home away from home for children participating in pediatric biomedical clinical trials at the NIH.
At Yale, Dr. Santacroce is currently the Coordinator of the Chronic Illness Concentration in the PNP Specialty at YSN and Director of Nursing Education and Research for HERO*S, a comprehensive program of follow-up care at Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) for young people successfully treated for childhood cancer. Dr. Santacroce is a member of the Yale Cancer Center, an associate of the Yale Children's Oncology Group site, a member of the Oncology Nursing Council at YNHH, and holds medical staff privileges at YNHH as an Advanced Practice Nurse in pediatric hematology/oncology. Beyond Yale, Dr. Santacroce is currently a member of the International Editorial Board, Journal of Child Health Care, consultant to the Oncology Nursing Society on the Developing APN-Researcher Partnerships, and an Expert Participant, Survivorship and Late Effects, Priority Research Agenda Panel, Oncology Nursing Society.
