Sara Thurman, a second year family nurse practitioner student at YSN, was recently awarded one of five Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing Scholarship at a reception held at the VNA of South Central CT on April 15.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a YSN Student who demonstrates the potential for excellence in clinical practice, leadership, scholarship and/or education that, at some point in their career, may be deserving of Nightingale recognition.

"Sara has demonstrated her commitment to Yale University School of Nursing, its students, and the field of nursing through her contributions both in and out of the classroom," commented Frank Grosso, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. "She is highly intelligent, outgoing, and exemplifies the School's mission of providing better health care for all people."

In addition to her work at YSN, Sara earned a bachelor of arts in Environmental Sciences (Biological Studies Emphasis) from the University of California at Berkeley, where she graduated with departmental honors. She is a registered nurse in the states of Connecticut and California, and is also a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing Member, Delta Mu Chapter.

Her clinical experience includes work with La Escuelita Health Care Project, Managua, Nicaragua, where she assisted in the establishment of the first of a five-year, weeklong, school-based clinic. In Nicaragua, she also performed intake histories, examinations, & assessments on children aged 3-16 years old.
