YSN celebrates the legacy of philanthropist Beatrice Renfield

New Haven, CT — April 14, 2006

On Tuesday, April 4 YSN celebrated the legacy of philanthropist Beatrice Renfield through whose generosity YSN established The Beatrice Renfield - Yale School of Nursing Clinical Research Initiatives Fund. The program featured with presentations by the four inaugural awardees, who presented their research findings. The work of these researchers and their colleagues focused on the development of models of care that advance nursing practice and improve health care, especially for patients in underserved communities. Their presentations were as follows:

Deborah Chyun, RN, MSN, PhD

Developing and Disseminating a Multidisciplinary Intervention for Asymptomatic Myocardial Ischemia

Angela Crowley, APRN, CS, PNP, PhD

Improving Child and Family Health through Child Care Health Consultation

Barbara Hackley, RN, MSN, CNM

An Exploratory Study of the Factors Related to Weight Gain and Weight Retention for Pregnant and Postpartum Black and Hispanic Women

M. Tish Knobf, RN, PhD, FAAN, AOCN

Breast Cancer Survivorship Rehabilitation: Development of an Educational-Support Nursing Intervention

The main goal of The Beatrice Renfield - Yale School of Nursing Clinical Research Initiatives Fund is two-fold, to support research that examines the impact of clinical nursing interventions on patient care, and to disseminate those findings to all relevant audiences. This program directly aligns with the School's mission to improve health care for all people focusing on clinical innovations. The Clinical Initiatives Fund supports projects that focus on the effectiveness of nursing interventions, as well as projects that demonstrate and examine patient care delivery models.

"Mrs. Renfield's gift helps seasoned clinicians and scholars to systematically demonstrate and evaluate nursing interventions that hold serious promise to improve the care of patients, build and test models of nursing care delivery that result in effective patient-centered care, and support the translation and demonstration of these findings using the most effective dissemination strategies available," said YSN Dean Margaret Grey.

Since 2004, ten pilot studies have been funded. For more information about The Beatrice Renfield - Yale School of Nursing Clinical Research Initiatives Fund, visit:http://nursing.yale.edu/Research/Innovations/.
