Four new Yale-Howard Scholars will work with YSN faculty mentors in June/July, 2006, bringing the total number of Scholars to over thirty since the program's inception in 2000. Sharita M. Liser, Foluke Oladeinde, LeSabre Z. Bowens and Oluseyi Sofoluwe (in photo above) are Howard University Division of Nursing (HUDON) students currently enrolled in an intensive six-week summer internship in which they form a close working relationship with YSN faculty mentors. This year's mentors are Lawrence Scahill, Robin Whittemore, Terri Clark, Kris Fennie and Jane Dixon from YSN and Karen Bearss, a postdoctoral fellow at the Yale Child Study Center.
Each student has identified a research question and is pursuing that interest through mentored research, seminars, and shadowing of advanced practice nurses. This provides the Yale Howard Scholars with access to a significant amount of data and the support and guidance of a research team, but also allows them to work independently. The summer experience at Yale is designed to enrich the Scholars' understanding of research, the role of the advanced practice registered nurse and the impact of clinical nursing research on the health of individuals and families.
The summer experience will culminate in a final presentation that each Scholar will make about their research project to YSN and HUDON faculty and members of the Yale/New Haven community.
This year's presentations will take place on Monday, July 10, 2006 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the YSN Lecture Hall. A celebration luncheon will follow. Everyone from the community is encouraged to attend. For more information contact coretta.jenerette@yale.edu.
