Recipient of The New York Times Job Market Nursing Award to deliver Annual Bellos Lecture at Yale School of Nursing
New Haven, CT — March 14, 2007
Jane Metzger, RN, DNSc, will be the keynote speaker at Yale School of Nursing's 2007 Sybil Palmer Bellos Lecture. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 18, at 3:30 p.m. in Yale School of Nursing Lecture Hall, Room 118, 100 Church Street South, New Haven.
Her talk titled "Approaching the Perfect Storm" is an overview of the rapidly changing forces in health care that are coming together to create a critically important juncture for the profession of nursing. Will nurses view these as creative and innovative opportunities or will these escalating demands be seen as negative and de-energizing? Ms. Metzger will explore how nurses might weather this "storm."
"Jane Metzger is an acknowledged leader in health care and administration," commented Margaret Grey, DrPH, RN, FAAN, Dean of Yale School of Nursing and Annie Goodrich Professor. "Her insights are applicable to all health care settings struggling with increasing costs and nursing shortages. Our entire community is excited about her joining us for this lecture."
Ms. Metzger is senior vice president and chief nursing officer at Rhode Island Hospital and its Hasbro Children's Hospital. In this role, she oversees inpatient, adult and pediatric emergency nursing services, as well as the surgical, cardiology, infection control and endoscopy areas at the largest and busiest hospital in Rhode Island.
Under her guidance, the hospital introduced Physician Order Management (POM), Medication Administration Check (MAK) and computerized intra operative charting; designed and opened a new Adult Emergency Department with a volume of 105,000 annual visits, a new surgical intensive care unit, a new surgical suite with ten new operating rooms, pre/post recovery rooms and a new endovascular suite. Currently she is working with administration on a new bed project that will add three medical floors to the hospital’s newest building.
Within the Division of Nursing at Rhode Island Hospital, Ms. Metzger has also implemented "Shared Governance," where these councils have been instrumental in achieving quality outcomes. She has also developed the "Leadership at the Bedside" series, a nursing scholarship program, and contributed her expertise to revive the Nursing Administration Program at URI and make it available on the Rhode Island Hospital campus. Advanced Nurses recognized these initiatives with recognition as a Leader/Educator in 2004.
Ms. Metzger received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire and her Master’s degree from Northern Illinois University. She received her doctoral degree from Widener University in Chester, PA, and is an adjunct faculty member at URI, and courtesy faculty at Yale University School of Nursing.
In 2003, Ms. Metzger was recognized with two leadership awards, the RI State Nurse’s Association Nurse Leadership Award, and The New York Times’ Job Market Nursing Award, in its "Tribute to Nurses" series, in which four nurses were honored from over 500 nominees nationwide.
This event is free and open to the public. To attend, or for more information, please contact Sydney Martin at sydney.martin@yale.edu, or call 203-785-2393.
