Yale University School of Nursing (YSN) proudly announces the creation of the Helen Varney Chair in Midwifery. This endowed Chair honors the contributions of Helen Varney Burst in midwifery education, practice and scholarship.
The Varney Chair will lead faculty development in research, education, practice and policy at Yale, and is a tenured position.
The campaign, which began in 2004 with Helen's retirement from Yale, was designed to create an endowed senior faculty position in midwifery at Yale University School of Nursing named after one of YSN's most distinguished alumnae/i and the profession's renowned leaders.
The Helen Varney Chair in Midwifery reflects Yale's commitment to educating future leaders in the scholarship and education of the care of women and children. A search committee will soon be formed to fill the position.
YSN has a rich history in midwifery education. With nearly 500 graduates since 1958, YSN has prepared many of the leaders in the profession. Among the many contributions to the profession, Yale Midwives have established midwifery education programs in other academic institutions throughout the United States, developed new models of care which have shaped the profession, directed midwifery services, held leadership positions in many of the national and international professional organizations including the American College of Nurse-Midwives and authored the first textbook in nurse-midwifery. Yale Midwives have earned a reputation for excellence in clinical practice and education. They have been on the front lines of improving patient care through their research and their efforts to shape healthcare policy.
